Q & A

Why did you choose your profession?

I was always mechanically inclined and often worked on cars, boats, audio recording, and electronics projects, and through middle school, high school, and after, I worked in almost every construction trade there is. I decided to go to school for chemical engineering but quickly found electrical engineering more interesting. I love the engineering and design process but became intrigued with all the aspects of owning and running a business, and that was the start of Bella Technologies, Inc.

Who is the one person who has done the most, to shape you into who you are today? How was this person significant to you?

There are many who helped me along my career journey but, if I had to pick one, it would be Bob Pavey. He was a founder and principal at Morgenthaler Ventures (now with Pavey Family Investments) and was my first exposure to venture capital. Unique among his billionaire venture capital contemporaries, he is very down to earth and was always willing to answer questions and give his opinion on any opportunity where I sought his counsel. His humility, even after achieving tremendous success and wealth, is inspiring.

What has been the greatest accomplishment of your life so far?

In my personal life, it would be raising three wonderful, successful children with my incredible wife, Doreen. Professionally, it would be a tie between starting my own business, growing it and selling off product line, and merging two clients to form a new business and raising $3.7MM to fund it. The merger was a case where I could see a vision and communicate that to investors such that they wanted to give me their money to start and run it.

How would your teammates and peers describe your responsiveness as a leader?

I would believe that they would describe my response as complete and immediate. I always give anyone to whom I am speaking my complete attention, no phone calls, texts, emails, or interruptions. I strive to be open and inviting, willing to listen to all ideas and input. I may not always agree with you, but I will respect and consider your thoughts and opinions and reply with clear reasons if I do not agree and I will give a response timeframe for anything on which I need to take action.
